Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Airport (LGB) has made significant strides in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing its original climate goals and receiving renewed recognition for its efforts. The airport, located in Long Beach, California, has reduced its emissions by an impressive 56% since 2016 and was recently awarded Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) from Airports Council International.

This achievement highlights LGB's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his pride in the airport's accomplishments, stating that "sustainability and innovation can thrive together." He sees the renewed carbon accreditation as a milestone on the airport's journey towards a greener future.

The announcement of LGB's renewed accreditation was made at the Airports Council International-North America Annual Conference in Toronto in October. This recognition is based on the airport's ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions on a per-passenger basis, with the ultimate goal of becoming a carbon-neutral facility. LGB has already surpassed its original emission reduction goals of 20% by 2025 and 40% by 2030, compared to 2016 levels.

LGB first received its ACA certification in 2021 after conducting inventories of its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from 2016 to 2019. These emissions reduction targets are based on a baseline year of 2016. Scope 1 emissions include sources that are owned or controlled by the airport, such as vehicles, refrigerant losses, and emergency backup generators. Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from purchased energy consumption, such as electricity and natural gas. The accuracy of these inventories was verified by an independent third-party as a condition of the certification.

The airport has implemented various sustainability initiatives to achieve these impressive results. This includes participating in a voluntary emissions reduction program with the South Coast Air Quality Management District and fully electrifying all commercial gates for ground service equipment. LGB also encourages the use of cleaner, unleaded aviation fuel (UL94) for general aviation users and supports Atlantic Aviation's program to supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for business jets. Additionally, in 2024, the airport installed two solar canopy installations covering nearly 133,000 square feet on its parking structures, resulting in a 10% decrease in Airport-controlled and purchased electricity usage compared to the previous year.

Cynthia Guidry, the Airport Director, is determined to not only meet but surpass sustainability targets. She believes that by reducing emissions and building resiliency for the future, LGB can remain a responsible neighbor and environmental leader to ensure a healthier tomorrow. As part of Level 2 ACA requirements, LGB will continue to develop and update its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions inventories, implement its carbon management plan, and reduce its carbon footprint each year. The ultimate goal is to achieve Level 3+, or carbon neutrality for all airport emissions.
