PASADENA, Calif. - Californer -- Jack Rutberg Fine Arts will present a rare exhibition of one of America's most highly regarded figurative painters in the much-anticipated exhibition "Jerome Witkin – Epic." The exhibition opens Sunday, November 1, 2026 with a reception from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.
Jerome Witkin's tour-de-force figurative paintings evoke every detail in complex narratives with technique is akin to the gestures of an Abstract Expressionist. His narratives are filmic and evocative, standing apart from other contemporary narrative artists.
In "Jerome Witkin – Epic" his virtuosity is evident in large works evoking a narrative with painterly complexity few artists would attempt. Equally evocative is a group of small paintings and drawings of urban scenes and figures in the exhibition. A publication accompanying the exhibition is forthcoming.
More on The Californer
While Witkin's paintings are rarely seen in person, critics and curators who have engaged his works have been effusive, about his skill but also for his empathetic interrogation of the profound events of our times that otherwise would be indescribable. Witkin has drawn comparisons to giants of art history such as Ingres, Lucian Freud, and the Old Masters.
"Jerome Witkin – Epic" will extend through December 24. Jack Rutberg Fine Arts is located at 600 South Lake Ave., #102, Pasadena, CA 91106. Free parking entry is on South Lake Ave., with gallery entrance through the lobby. Hours are Tues.-Fri. 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., & Sat. 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
