NOAA also reported that July 2026 was the warmest month in the 132-year U.S. record.
How do you build an outdoor living room when summers keep getting hotter?
Architectural engineer and remodeling expert Andy Gibbs has two rules:
Shade comes first. "Moving hot air with a fan just turns a hot patio into a convection oven."
Design for the hottest afternoon, not the perfect evening.

Before demolishing the interior, Andy and Paula need an outdoor living environment that works while major indoor spaces are unusable. The final design opens the interior living room directly into the outdoor living room as one integrated space.
The 2,024-square-foot home will gain roughly 30% more usable living space outdoors, anchored by a motorized-louver pergola, outdoor kitchen, entertainment areas, hardscape and xeriscape landscaping.
A plunge pool remains under evaluation based on cost, water use and actual usefulness.
"In the desert, an outdoor room has to earn its square footage," Gibbs said.
Back Nine will document costs, trade-offs and performance for shade, cooling, storm protection, lighting, materials, landscaping and indoor-outdoor connections.
A true outdoor room has to work in August, not just look good in January.
Manufacturer-provided products will be identified separately so readers can see what a typical homeowner would actually pay.
