~ California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the deployment of specialized personnel to assist with hurricane response efforts ahead of Hurricane Milton's expected landfall in Florida this week.

In a press release issued on October 7, 2024, Governor Newsom stated that a total of 284 highly trained individuals have been deployed to support emergency operations and search and rescue efforts. This includes 144 firefighters and ground support personnel from three California Urban Search and Rescue Task Force teams.

This deployment is in addition to the resources that were recently sent to assist with the response to Hurricane Helene. These resources included 140 firefighters and support personnel from California/FEMA US&R Task Forces 5 and 6, as well as California Swiftwater Task Force 1.

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is working closely with FEMA to coordinate the deployment of these specialized teams. The teams being deployed include members from the Los Angeles City Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and Menlo Park Fire Protection District. They are trained in structural collapse and swift water/flood environments and are expected to arrive in Georgia in the coming days before being dispatched.

Governor Newsom expressed his condolences for those affected by Hurricane Helene and stated that California stands with them during this difficult time. He also emphasized the importance of sending additional resources to support critical emergency response and recovery efforts as Hurricane Milton approaches landfall.

Cal OES Director Nancy Ward also commented on the deployment, stating that these highly skilled teams are ready to assist those in need during this natural disaster. She highlighted their training in extreme environments and their ability to help preserve life and property.

This is not the first time that California has sent aid to other states during natural disasters. In recent years, they have deployed firefighters to states such as New Mexico, Hawaii, Oregon, Montana, Texas, and Georgia.

In addition to this news about hurricane response efforts, Governor Newsom also announced a new initiative to revolutionize youth sports in California. The 25x25 Coaches Challenge, in partnership with the Million Coaches Challenge, aims to train 25,000 youth coaches in California by 2025. This initiative sets a new standard for positive youth development and equity in sports.

The Governor's Advisory Council and the Million Coaches Challenge will work together to achieve this goal and provide access to quality coaching for young athletes in California.

In another statement, Governor Newsom marked the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel. He expressed his condolences for the more than 1,200 innocent lives lost and condemned this horrific act of violence.

Lastly, California has launched a revamped version of its CA.gov website. This updated portal connects individuals with hundreds of state services and programs such as CalFresh, birth certificates, and business licenses. The new website aims to make it easier for Californians to access important government resources.
