California: Governor, First Partner statement on the passing of Michael Tilson Thomas

~ Renowned conductor, composer, and member of the California Hall of Fame, Michael Tilson Thomas, passed away today at the age of 76. Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom issued a statement expressing their condolences and honoring Thomas' contributions to the world of classical music.

"Michael Tilson Thomas redefined classical music for the modern era," the statement read. "A teacher at heart, he found new and innovative ways to make music accessible to the public – and, more than that, to make it exciting for everyday people."

Thomas was known for taking creative risks and championing new and often overlooked composers and pieces. He also had a talent for bringing out the best in the musicians he worked with, as well as his audiences.

The Governor and First Partner also highlighted Thomas' ability to connect with people through his music. "He reminded us what that enchantment could feel like in our souls through his enthusiasm and deep understanding of music's emotional power," they said.

Thomas' impact extended beyond just his home state of California. He was recognized as one of the most influential conductors in the world, having served as music director for renowned orchestras such as the San Francisco Symphony, New World Symphony, and London Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Thomas was also known for his generosity and representation of California's best qualities. "He was bold, innovative, thoughtful, and generous," stated Governor Newsom. "He represented the best of what California has to offer."

As a tribute to Thomas' legacy, Governor Newsom proclaimed April 28th as "Workers' Memorial Day" in honor of the 195 workers who have lost their lives while working on California's highways. This proclamation was made during Caltrans' annual Workers Memorial event.

In other news related to California's arts scene, Governor Newsom announced 38 new film projects coming to the state. These projects include major productions from industry leaders such as DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures, as well as independent production company Gloria Sanchez Productions.

Finally, Governor Newsom announced several appointments, including Nicole Elliott to the California Water Commission. Elliott previously served as Director of the California Department of Cannabis Control from 2021 to 2025.

The passing of Michael Tilson Thomas is a loss for the world of classical music, but his impact and legacy will continue to live on through his music and the lives he touched.
