~ SACRAMENTO - In a statement released today, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his excitement over the University of California Board of Regents' selection of James Milliken as the new president of the University of California. The governor emphasized the importance of strong institutions in shaping California's future and believes that Milliken's experience and leadership will expand UC's impact across the state.
"Chancellor Milliken brings years of experience and the steady, strategic leadership needed to expand UC's impact across the state," said Governor Newsom. "I am excited to see him drive the next chapter of innovation, talent, and progress that will shape California and the country for generations to come."
The governor also took the opportunity to thank Dr. Michael Drake for his leadership and vision during his tenure as UC president. He praised Drake as a strong partner and acknowledged his contributions in growing the next generation of California leaders. Drake recently announced his retirement.
James B. ("JB") Milliken is currently serving as chancellor of The University of Texas System, where he also holds the Lee Hage and Joseph D. Jamail Regents Chair in Higher Education Leadership. With 14 academic and health institutions under his oversight, including seven medical schools and five Carnegie R1 research universities, Milliken brings a wealth of experience to his new role at UC.

In other news, Governor Newsom announced new tax credits that are expected to generate a $2.1 billion investment in California's economy. As part of the California Jobs First initiative, $30.5 million in tax credits will be awarded to seven companies committed to creating new jobs across key industries such as clean energy and advanced technology.
