~ Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared May 2025 as "Small Business Month" in California. With over 4.2 million small businesses, the state leads the nation in business startups and received more than half of the nation's venture capital in 2024.

In a proclamation issued today, Governor Newsom highlighted the vital role that small businesses play in driving the economy of the Golden State. These businesses not only create jobs and wealth, but also contribute to innovation and problem-solving on a global scale.

According to the proclamation, California's small businesses make up over 99.9% of total businesses in the state and employ nearly half of its private sector workforce. The state also leads the nation in high-tech industries, agriculture, and manufacturing output.

To support and nurture small businesses, California has implemented various initiatives such as AB 2019 which sets a procurement spending goal of 25% for small businesses. The Small Business Technical Assistance Program also provides resources for entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses.

Furthermore, through the Accelerate California Inclusive Innovation Hubs, the state is working towards expanding and diversifying the innovation economy by providing access to resources in underserved communities and supporting emerging tech sectors.

In light of this, Governor Newsom condemned U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s call for a review of mifepristone - a safe and legal abortion medication - stating that it would target abortion access.

The governor's proposed budget includes measures to streamline permitting processes and accelerate development in order to increase housing availability and economic opportunities for Californians.

Despite challenges such as the "Trump Slump," Governor Newsom remains committed to providing tax cuts for military retirees, universal pre-kindergarten, expanded before and after school programs, free school meals for all children, boosting literacy and reading, building more housing, increasing water supply, and lowering drug prices.

In conclusion, Governor Newsom's proclamation of "Small Business Month" serves as a recognition of the significant contributions made by small businesses to California's economy. It also highlights the state's commitment to supporting and promoting their success in order to make the California Dream accessible to all.
