~ SACRAMENTO - On July 2, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom honored fallen California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Cano in a statement following his tragic passing. Officer Cano was involved in an on-duty crash after suffering a suspected medical emergency on Bristol Parkway near Green Valley Circle in Culver City.
The Governor expressed his deep sadness and extended his condolences to Officer Cano's wife, parents, loved ones, and the men and women of the CHP. He praised Officer Cano for dedicating his life to serving communities and embodying the best of the Golden State with his courage, commitment, and sense of duty.
Officer Cano, who was just 34 years old, graduated from the CHP academy in November 2023 and had proudly served the West Los Angeles community for a year and a half. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, he was ultimately pronounced deceased.

In honor of Officer Cano's service, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff. This is the first line-of-duty loss for the CHP since 2020.
The circumstances surrounding Officer Cano's crash are still under investigation. However, it is believed that he suffered a medical emergency while on duty.
Governor Newsom also made headlines today for announcing an expansion of California's Film and Television Tax Credit Program. He shared that 16 new projects will be filmed in the state, generating $1.1 billion in economic activity.
In other news, Republicans have been fearmongering about gas prices increasing by 65 cents on July 1st. However, this has not been the case in California as gas prices have actually decreased since yesterday.
Additionally, crime rates in California have dropped once again with the state recording its second-lowest homicide rate since 1966. This is attributed to significant investments in public safety, ensuring the safety of communities statewide.
As the House of Representatives prepares to vote on important legislation, California continues to deliver on its promises and make strides in public safety and economic growth.
