~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck this morning. The Governor was briefed on the situation by state emergency officials earlier today.
The emergency proclamation will provide additional resources for the emergency response to the earthquake. Governor Newsom expressed gratitude for the state's robust system that worked as intended and kept people safe and informed.
The text of the proclamation can be found on the Governor's website. In addition, Governor Newsom has directed state agencies and departments to utilize state personnel, equipment, and facilities to assist with emergency response efforts. The proclamation also authorizes state agencies to enter into contracts for necessary materials, goods, and services.
Furthermore, fairgrounds and state property will be made available for sheltering purposes. The California National Guard (CalGuard) has also been mobilized to support disaster relief efforts.

Additionally, ongoing operations by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Bakersfield have resulted in over 2,000 arrests since April. These arrests include felonies and DUIs, with over 60 illicit firearms recovered. This joint operation was launched by Governor Newsom in April to increase enforcement in the area.
Governor Newsom also announced reappointments today. Matt Baker will continue serving on the Public Utilities Commission where he has been since 2024. Baker previously served as Director of Public Advocates Office for the Public Utilities Commission.
These appointments are part of Governor Newsom's ongoing efforts to ensure effective leadership within California's government agencies.
As Northern California continues to recover from this morning's earthquake, residents are urged to stay informed and follow any safety precautions issued by local authorities. The state will continue to provide support and resources to those affected by the disaster.
