Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) has recently announced the unveiling of its newest addition, the Filipino American Cultural Heritage Collection. The collection will be housed at the Bret Harte Neighborhood Library and will be open to the public on Saturday, May 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, this collection is now one of the largest in Southern California and reflects the library's dedication to education, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. He stated, "Through this collection and event, we are honoring the deep contributions of our vibrant Filipino American community and encouraging meaningful conversations and shared experiences."
The unveiling event will celebrate the enduring presence, cultural contributions, and resilience of Filipino Americans in Long Beach. It will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, cultural performances, a book reading by Filipino authors, and a Filipino family story time. The city's large and longstanding Filipino American community has played a significant role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of West Long Beach.

Cathy DeLeon, Director of Long Beach Public Library, expressed her excitement for this new collection by saying, "This is more than a collection - it's a space for storytelling, identity, and recognition." She added that they are proud to help amplify Filipino American voices and histories in a way that inspires future generations.
The new collection features a diverse selection of bilingual books and multimedia resources for all ages. It offers opportunities for readers to connect with and celebrate their Filipino American heritage. With over 760 items available, Long Beach's Filipino American Cultural Heritage Collection is now one of the largest in Southern California. This highlights the library's commitment to inclusivity and cultural representation.
In addition to this new collection, LBPL is also celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month until May 31. The library has organized various events throughout the month that can be found on their events calendar.
All AAPI programs at the library, including the Filipino American Cultural Heritage Collection, are generously funded by the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library. A portion of the collection was also made possible through an Inspiration Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
