OAKLAND, Calif. - Californer -- Stray Theories returns with Falter, the fifth full-length album from New Zealand composer and multi-instrumentalist Micah Templeton-Wolfe. Long recognized for shaping a distinct intersection of ambient music, neoclassical composition, and post-rock, Templeton-Wolfe advances his approach on this new work with a heightened sense of depth and emotional contour.
The album's title suggests wavering and uncertainty, yet the music itself presents a striking counterpoint. Falter opens in a state of quiet assurance, drawing listeners into a cinematic landscape where each passage feels like a step toward renewal. Optimism moves through the record in measured threads, often shadowed by doubt, while reflective calm and gentle melancholy coexist in equal measure. As the album unfolds, there is an unmistakable feeling of anticipation, as though something just beyond reach is gradually revealing itself.

In tone and intent, Falter stands as one of Templeton-Wolfe's most resonant works. While his previous albums embraced delicate textures and atmospheric detail, this release reaches further into expressive territory, heightening the emotional stakes without sacrificing subtlety. The piece "Lifelines" emerges as the album's most hopeful moment, offering a glimpse of clarity and uplift, and suggesting that the movement through uncertainty ultimately leads toward renewal.
Falter will be released on February 6 in limited-edition transparent red vinyl and on compact disc. Preorders are available now through n5MD's Bandcamp and international partners. The track "Catalyst" is available for streaming on all major platforms.
