A practical walking plan for fat loss that protects muscle, fits a busy schedule, and works without exhausting workouts.

LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Walking is the most underrated fat-loss tool in fitness. It burns calories without exhausting you, it does not spike hunger the way hard cardio can, and it protects muscle because it is low impact. For many people, a smart walking plan beats another brutal workout.

Here is the simple plan I give clients. First, set a daily step target you can actually keep. If you currently walk 4,000 steps a day, aim for 7,000 to 8,000, not 15,000. Progress you can keep beats a target you quit in a week.

Second, make part of the walking brisk. A pace where you can talk but not sing is the right zone. Two or three 10-minute brisk walks spread through the day are easier to fit in than one long session, and they add up to the same result.

Third, walk after meals. A 10-minute walk after lunch and dinner helps control blood sugar and digestion, and it turns dead time into fat-loss time.

Fourth, progress slowly. Add about 1,000 steps per day every one to two weeks. When walking feels easy, add a hill, a faster pace, or a weighted vest, not more hours.

Walking alone will not fix a bad diet, but combined with sensible eating it is one of the most reliable fat-loss tools there is, because it is the one people actually keep doing.
