~ As the federal deadline for a consensus agreement on managing the Colorado River after 2026 approaches, Lower Basin Governors have released a joint statement expressing their concerns and commitment to finding a solution.
Governors Gavin Newsom of California, Katie Hobbs of Arizona, and Joe Lombardo of Nevada have all come together to address the urgency of reaching an agreement before the deadline passes for a second time without resolution. The Lower Basin states of Arizona, California, and Nevada are heavily reliant on the Colorado River, with approximately 75% of the population, employment, and agricultural crop sales in the basin located within these states. This also includes 25 out of the 30 sovereign Tribal Nations that reside within the basin.
The governors emphasize that the Colorado River is essential to their communities and economies, and their states have already taken significant steps to conserve water in recent years in order to stabilize water supplies for years to come. In order to secure a seven-state agreement for post-2026 management of the river, Arizona has offered to reduce its allocation by 27%, California by 10%, and Nevada by nearly 17%. The governors maintain that all seven basin states must share in the responsibility of conservation in order for this agreement to be successful.

Their statement also highlights their commitment to finding a collaborative solution that involves compromise from all parties involved. They have offered flexibility in allowing states without robust conservation programs time to gradually develop these programs in ways that work best for each state. The governors stress that their future management of the Colorado River must be built on shared contribution and innovation from all water users.
Governors Newsom, Hobbs, and Lombardo remain steadfast in their pursuit of a negotiated resolution while protecting their respective water users. They believe that this can only be achieved through collaboration and compromise from all parties involved. As they continue negotiations ahead of the federal deadline, they urge all stakeholders to work together towards finding a solution that will ensure the sustainability of the Colorado River for years to come.
In other news, Governor Newsom's efficiency strategies have been making significant improvements in state government, with a focus on fighting fraud, saving time, and cutting costs. California continues to build efficiency, effectiveness, and engagement in order to make the state work better for its citizens.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has declared the Republican Party as the "pro-pollution party" after his administration repealed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Endangerment Finding. This move has been met with criticism as it disavows the federal government's authority to protect Americans from climate pollution and regulate vehicle greenhouse gas emissions.
