~ Sacramento - On February 6, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom declared it Ronald Reagan Day in the State of California through a proclamation. The former president, who was born in Illinois but considered himself a Californian at heart, was honored for his contributions to the state and the nation.
President Reagan's sunny optimism and belief in the future inspired millions of people around the world. He began his career by working his way through college in the Midwest before becoming a successful actor. He then went on to serve as president of a major union, spokesperson for conservative causes, governor of California, and eventually president of the United States.
Despite facing an assassination attempt just 69 days into his presidency, President Reagan's energy and spirit remained unwavering. He played a crucial role in bringing an end to the Cold War and implemented comprehensive immigration reform that provided a path to citizenship for thousands of undocumented immigrants.
Governor Newsom acknowledged President Reagan's legacy and expressed gratitude for his family's continued work in supporting families affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom stated, "NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim February 6, 2026, as 'Ronald Reagan Day.'"
The ceremony was attended by government officials and members of the public who gathered to honor President Reagan's memory. The Great Seal of California was affixed to the proclamation as Governor Newsom signed it with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber as witness.
In other recent news from California, 129 new cadets graduated from the CHP Academy today. These officers will now serve their communities across the state as part of the California Highway Patrol.
Governor Newsom also addressed a recent letter from South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem regarding ICE and criminal deportations. The Governor's Office responded by stating that California does not block ICE from deporting violent criminals and urged Governor Noem to do her research before sending "stupid letters."
Furthermore, Governor Newsom announced funding for Los Angeles fire survivors to access pre-built housing options in order to speed up the rebuilding and recovery process while maintaining the design and character of the affected neighborhoods. This initiative has already seen success with completed homes in Palisades and Altadena.
As California continues to make progress in various areas, Governor Newsom's administration remains committed to honoring the state's past, supporting its present, and building a better future for all Californians.
