PASADENA, Calif. - Californer -- EATON CANYON, Calif. — Mr. Angel, a disabled cancer survivor, retiree, and working artist living in Eaton Canyon, is calling for a formal review of alleged retaliation, discrimination, and mishandling of housing assistance following the Eaton Fire. Angel alleges that he remained trapped in the fire zone for about 11 hours after apartment management told him there was no immediate danger. Despite serious medical limitations, he says he used a garden hose to fight spot fires threatening nearby property while awaiting rescue.
According to Angel, he suffered significant physical harm from smoke, ash, and toxic fume exposure and required roughly five weeks of recovery. During that time, he says he relied on his nurse for temporary shelter and care.
After the fire, Angel alleges he was served with a three-day eviction notice and subjected to additional retaliatory conduct. He also contends that during his efforts to obtain help through Section 8 and the Los Angeles County Development Authority, paperwork was mishandled or lost, his written request for review was not meaningfully addressed, and he was not given reasonable support during a period of severe medical and housing vulnerability.

Angel further alleges an ongoing pattern of harassment connected to the property, including unexplained power shutoffs and repeated vandalism involving screws placed in the tires of his nurse's vehicle while parked on-site. He is calling on public agencies and local officials to review the matter for possible violations of tenant protections, disability rights, and anti-retaliation laws, and to strengthen safeguards for disabled tenants, seniors, and fire survivors facing housing instability in Los Angeles County.
"This has been a deeply painful and destabilizing experience," said Mr. Angel. "I am asking for a fair review of the facts, accountability where warranted, and stronger protections so that other vulnerable residents are not subjected to similar treatment."
This release reflects Mr. Angel's account and allegations. No court or agency has made findings on the matters described herein.
