~ SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Senator-elect Adam Schiff to the U.S. Senate to complete the remaining term of Senator Laphonza Butler, who announced her resignation effective December 8, 2024.

Senator Butler, who was elected to the Senate in October 2023, stepped down to ensure that Californians have their duly elected representative seated as soon as possible. Senator-elect Schiff is expected to be sworn in on Monday, December 9, 2024.

In a statement, Governor Newsom praised Senator Butler for her dedication and service, saying she has left an indelible mark in just a short time in office. He also thanked her for honoring the life and legacy of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Senator Butler's resignation comes after a successful career as a labor leader and advocate for women and working people. She was the first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the U.S. Senate and the third Black woman to serve in that role.
