Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) is excited to announce the start of Long Beach Walk to School Week, which will run from March 17th to March 21st. This annual event aims to promote physical activity, pedestrian safety, and reduce traffic congestion near school zones.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his support for the event, stating that "Long Beach Walk to School Week gives Long Beach students and their families a chance to develop lifelong healthy habits to promote mental and physical health." He also encouraged families to join in on the activities and promote the importance of a healthy heart while fostering connections within the community.
This year's theme is "Healthy Hearts," emphasizing the importance of physical activity for heart health and encouraging everyone to stay active while prioritizing safety. It also highlights the value of incorporating walking into daily routines as a way to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

The week-long event will include various activities that aim to build connections between families, schools, and the surrounding community. These activities include organized group walks, cheering students as they walk to school, and sharing nutrition and pedestrian safety resources in partnership with Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD).
Director of Health and Human Services Alison King expressed her excitement for this year's event, stating that "Imagine starting your day with a refreshing stroll with friends. This experience energizes your body and fosters a sense of community."
In addition to these activities, the Health Department will also host pop-up events at several elementary schools across the city before school starts. These events will feature encouraging messaging, music, and resources focused on pedestrian safety and staying physically active. A week-long social media campaign will also be launched as part of this fun-filled week.
