City of Long Beach Launches Safe & Secure Grant Program to Help Local Businesses Strengthen Storefront Safety

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has taken a proactive step towards promoting safety and security in its local businesses with the launch of the Safe & Secure Long Beach Grant Program. This new initiative, led by the Department of Economic Development & Opportunity (EDO), aims to assist small businesses in improving storefront safety through security upgrades.

According to Mayor Rex Richardson, "In Long Beach, we believe that safe businesses mean safe neighborhoods." With this in mind, the Safe & Secure Program is a direct investment in the hardworking business owners who contribute to the city's vibrant and welcoming commercial corridors. By providing them with the necessary tools to protect their storefronts and employees, the city hopes to build a stronger and safer community for all.

The Program offers financial assistance for small businesses to install security cameras, floodlighting, alarm systems, and other eligible security improvements. These upgrades are designed to improve visibility and enhance protection for employees, customers, and storefronts. Eligible improvements may also include security fencing on a case-by-case basis, as long as they comply with applicable City codes and permitting requirements. Businesses with storefronts up to 1,500 square feet can receive grants of up to $750 for essential security upgrades.

Interested businesses can apply for the grant online until funds are exhausted. The funding will be provided as a reimbursement after eligible security improvements are installed. To be eligible for the grant, applicants must operate a publicly accessible storefront within Long Beach and hold an active business license with the City. Bo Martinez, Director of EDO, believes that local businesses play a crucial role in fueling Long Beach's economy and contributing to its thriving neighborhood marketplaces. He states that through the Safe & Secure Program, business owners can make strategic investments in safety and security that support business growth while strengthening commercial corridors and promoting vibrant business districts throughout the city.

The Program is funded through a $350,000 allocation from the City's Redevelopment Agency (RDA) as part of the Fiscal Year 2026 budget. Additionally, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn's office has contributed an extra $50,000, bringing the total program funding to $400,000. Supervisor Hahn emphasizes the importance of supporting local small businesses and their role in creating a sense of community. She states, "Sometimes better lighting, security cameras or an alarm system can make a real difference." She is proud to help Long Beach fund this new program and enable businesses to make practical improvements to protect their employees, customers, and storefronts.
