Clinical EFT, an "evidence-based" stress-reduction therapy, is gaining widespread acceptance, as noted by training at university psychology departments in Europe, Australia, and Canada.
PETALUMA, Calif. - Californer -- Clinical EFT, an "evidence-based" stress-reduction therapy, is gaining widespread acceptance, as noted by training at university psychology departments in Europe, Australia, and Canada, as well as the growing success at the prestigious University of Medicine at Lyon, France.
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as acupoint tapping or simply "tapping," is a practice that combines acupressure (tapping on acupuncture points) with psychology's exposure therapy (focusing on distressing memories) and cognitive behavior therapy (reframing) to halt the stress response and clear pain and upset.
The process – which studies show can reduce stress within minutes – has been validated in research studies that meet the requirements of the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 12 Task Force on Empirically Validated Treatments.

At the University of Medicine, a special class of caregiver medical staff has been trained in Clinical EFT as part of the University Diploma in Brief Therapies.
This second class of its kind completed in Spring 2022 and was trained in Clinical EFT by Jean-Michel Gurret, a colleague of EFT pioneer Dawson Church. With over 20 psychologists, doctors, psychiatrists, and neurologists implementing EFT, the university diploma program has been a growing success at the prestigious French university.
According to Church, the institutional acceptance of Clinical EFT has been growing steady over the years, as demonstrated by, for example, the US Veterans Administration approving the practice in 2017. He says, "While clinical EFT and similar acupressure-based methods have been used by therapists since the 1970s, their adoption into primary care training is new. We look forward to working with increasing numbers of academic institutions to train mental health professionals in this remarkably effective therapy."

Evidence of wide-spread acceptance was shown at a recent symposium on suicide prevention. Sponsored by the State of Maryland's Department of Behavioral Health, VA psychologists organized a symposium to show how EFT could support the prevention of suicide. Invited speaker Janice Colestro, Director of Stress Solution, lead an informational session, and NIIH President Church lead a 2-hour clinical workshop.
The symposium's lead organizer stated that Church's workshop was the most-attended breakout session and obtained the highest participant ratings. The State of Maryland plans to make the session available as an ongoing Continuing Education training.
