SACRAMENTO ~ Sacramento, California - In a groundbreaking move, California is set to become the first state in the United States to welcome a new pair of giant pandas as part of a collaborative conservation effort with China. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has announced that it has signed a cooperative agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association and filed a permit application with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. If approved, two pandas are expected to arrive by the end of the summer.
Governor Gavin Newsom, who led a weeklong visit to China last October, expressed his excitement about this development. "California and China share deep cultural and economic ties, and we look forward to the opportunity to again welcome these iconic bears to the Golden State," he said. "From securing a safe future for this national treasure to fighting climate change, we're proud to continue our long history of working together towards shared goals."

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has been at the forefront of panda conservation efforts for decades and currently houses four giant pandas at their zoo. The organization is dedicated to protecting endangered species and promoting conservation efforts worldwide.
Last November, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in San Francisco, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China planned to send new pandas as "envoys of friendship" between the two nations. This announcement came after Governor Newsom's visit to China in October where he met with President Xi and other high-level officials to discuss climate action, economic development, tourism, and cultural ties.
The state hopes that this latest development will lead to further exchanges and cooperation between California and China. The two have a strong foundation of partnership built by previous governors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jerry Brown, as well as late Senator Dianne Feinstein. Governor Newsom also played a significant role in strengthening ties while serving as Mayor of San Francisco.
The arrival of these new pandas is not only an exciting event for California but also a testament to the strong relationship between the state and China. It is a symbol of their shared commitment to conservation and working towards a better future for all.
