~ Sacramento, California - In a move to honor and support the sacrifices made by California's veterans, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a package of bills on September 29, 2024. The legislation aims to streamline and simplify procedures that will benefit veterans and their families.
Governor Newsom expressed his pride in signing the bills into law, stating that it is the state's duty to support those who have served their country. He believes that these laws will not only honor their service but also improve their lives in California and ensure that their families have the necessary resources to thrive.
The new laws include measures such as allowing counties to refund improperly paid property taxes to disabled veterans and their surviving spouses without them having to file a claim for refund. This will provide much-needed financial relief for these individuals.
Another bill aims to reduce the burden on military-connected pupils and their families by designating specific public schools as California Purple Star schools. This recognition will not only honor the sacrifices made by military families but also provide them with additional support.

In addition, the legislation simplifies income screenings for affordable housing, making it easier for more veterans to qualify for this essential resource.
The bills signed by Governor Newsom include AB 535 by Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo (D-Chatsworth), AB 1884 by Assemblymember Christopher Ward (D-San Diego), AB 2555 by Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-La Palma), AB 2567 by Assemblymember Devon Mathis (R-Visalia), AB 3134 by Assemblymember Phillip Chen (R-Brea), SB 920 by Senator Kelly Seyarto (R-Murrieta), SB 1025 by Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman (D-Stockton), and SB 1138 by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton).
This is not the first time Governor Newsom has taken steps to support veterans. Last week, he announced the release of new program guidance for up to $2.2 billion in funding through Proposition 1 to build permanent supportive housing for veterans and other individuals facing homelessness. The program, known as Homekey+, will prioritize the acquisition and rehabilitation of existing buildings or other project types that can be quickly converted into affordable housing.
The Governor's efforts to support veterans also extend to addressing concerns in the processed food industry, increasing access to healthy and locally grown foods, and improving safety for Californians with disabilities.
With these new laws in place, California is taking significant steps towards honoring and supporting its veterans. Governor Newsom's commitment to improving the lives of those who have served their country is evident in his actions, and it is a testament to the state's dedication to its veterans.
