~ California Continues to Lead Nation in Job Creation and Wage Increases
Sacramento - As the nation's economic engine, California continues to set the pace for job creation and wage increases. According to recent data, California has accounted for one in six new jobs in the country through July 2026.
Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the state's strong economic performance, citing California's ability to drive job growth, increase productivity, and raise wages for workers. "California isn't just keeping pace - we're driving the national economy," said Governor Newsom. "We're investing in people and industries of the future, putting more money in the pockets of working Californians."
From the first quarter of 2025 to the first quarter of 2026, California added over 131,000 jobs - more than any other state during that period. This accounts for 16.5% of the nation's overall job growth since the beginning of the year.
In addition to job growth, California is also leading in productivity gains. Despite representing only 12% of the nation's population, California contributes approximately 14% of total U.S. economic output.

Wages have also seen an increase in California, with average weekly wages rising by 4.6% over the year to $1,954 in the fourth quarter of 2025 - surpassing the national increase of 4.2%.
Governor Newsom also highlighted California's commitment to ensuring workers share in economic growth by raising minimum wage annually to keep up with inflation. By January 1, 2027, California's minimum wage will reach $17.40 per hour - nearly two-and-a-half times higher than the federal minimum wage which has not been raised in almost two decades.
As a result of these strong economic indicators, California's annual GDP has grown by over $1 trillion since Governor Newsom took office in January 2025. The state's economy reached $4.25 trillion in 2025 and is projected to continue growing.
California also remains a leader in various industries, including being home to more businesses than Texas or Florida and being America's startup capital. In the first quarter of 2026, California's economy grew at a rate of 3.7% - one of the fastest growth rates in the nation and well above the U.S. growth rate of 2.1%.

Governor Newsom emphasized California's position as the world's fourth-largest economy and its continued success in creating new businesses, attracting venture capital, driving technological innovation, expanding advanced manufacturing, and leading in agriculture.
In addition to economic success, Governor Newsom also announced the launch of CA Bridge Connect - a free statewide call- and text-based service that offers immediate help and support to Californians seeking treatment for opioid use. This is part of California's "no wrong door" approach to addressing the opioid crisis.
The Governor also signed several bills into law, including AB 1778 which addresses controlled substances like testosterone and AB 2056 which focuses on teacher exchange programs.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom appointed twelve Superior Court Judges across various counties in California. These appointments aim to ensure fair and efficient administration of justice within the state.
As California continues to lead in job creation, wage increases, and various industries, Governor Newsom remains focused on creating opportunities for all Californians and building a strong future for the Golden State.
