LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., July 19, 2024 ~ The IEEE Computer Society (CS) has announced the highly anticipated keynotes for its upcoming IEEE SustainTech Leadership Forum. The event, which will take place on August 27-28, 2024 at the Hilton Bayfront in San Diego, California, will focus on exploring the latest environmentally friendly technologies that can be applied in the built environment.
With a specific focus on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), big data, computer vision, blockchain and more, the conference aims to showcase how these technologies can support sustainable practices for factories and businesses. The Forum is set to feature keynotes from some of the largest commercial organizations that are actively working towards implementing sustainable practices, including Mitsubishi and Panasonic.
Anthony Vetro, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL) and member of the SustainTech Program Leadership Board, emphasized the importance of sustainability in today's world. "Today, we are in an environment where sustainability is no longer a 'nice to have,' but a necessity," he stated. "Businesses and manufacturers have an opportunity to contribute significantly to sustainability. From waste reduction to resource efficiency and more, innovative sustainable practices can help create a better future for people and the planet."

The Forum will feature two prominent engineering leaders as keynote speakers: Takajiro "Tak" Ishikawa, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America (MHIA), and Andrea Murphy, Director of Environmental Affairs at Panasonic North America. Ishikawa's keynote titled "Navigating the Transition to Sustainable Energy Solutions in a Power-Hungry World" will take place on Tuesday, August 27 at 9:00 a.m. PDT. Murphy's talk titled "Transparency Is Hard, But Collaboration Can Make Reaching Sustainability Goals Easy (or at Least Easier)" will follow at 1:15 p.m. PDT on the same day.
On Wednesday, August 28 at 9:00 a.m. PDT, Aravind Padmanabhan, Executive VP and CTO of Nvent, will take the stage to discuss "Innovating for Product Sustainability – Making Data Centers Greener." These talks will address how innovative and integrated solutions can help achieve carbon neutrality, improve quality of life, and ensure a safer world.

Jyotika Athavale, 2024 IEEE CS President, highlighted the potential of sustainable AI in reducing technology's environmental impact. "Solutions like sustainable AI have the potential to drastically reduce technology's environmental impact," she said. "IEEE CS is committed to bettering our world through computer science and engineering, and advancing sustainability measures serves as a priority for our membership and the broader community."
