I'm sure you're all aware by now that we are in the middle of a global health crisis in a new form of Coronavirus (2019-nCov), a serious respiratory illness that is especially dangerous for anyone with reduced immunity.
Yesterday, we held a media briefing at the Long Beach Health Department about what's being done to keep Long Beach healthy. You can watch the briefing by clicking here.
I wanted to let you know that our City's Health Department and our public safety teams, the Long Beach Airport and the Port of Long Beach are closely monitoring this outbreak. This is a serious global public health crisis and we need to and are taking it very seriously. Long Beach residents and all residents across the County need to stay informed.
More on The Californer
I want to be clear - There are no confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in Long Beach.
But, we are not taking anything for granted. Our city is in constant communication with the CDC, State health agencies, LA County Health Department, local hospitals and urgent care centers, and our schools.
Coronavirus symptoms are similar to the flu, and like the flu, the illness is contagious. Transmission can occur through coughing and sneezing, close personal contact such as touching or shaking hands, or touching an infected surface and then touching your mouth or eyes before washing your hands.
So, I'd like to remind everyone, please help prevent the spread of the flu, a cold or virus by washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, and remember to stay home if you are sick.
The City will continue to monitor the Coronavirus as the situation develops.
Stay safe and Go Long Beach,
