~ Long Beach, CA - On May 6, 2025, the City of Long Beach held its annual Police and Fire Memorial Ceremony to honor fallen employees from the Police and Fire Departments. The ceremony, a longstanding tradition for both departments, took place at the Police and Fire Memorial monument in the Civic Center Plaza downtown.
The event paid tribute to the 29 police employees and 14 firefighters who have lost their lives while serving the Long Beach community. City officials, including Mayor Rex Richardson, Police Chief Wally Hebeish, and Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan, gathered to honor these brave individuals.
In his remarks, Mayor Richardson spoke of the extraordinary courage and dedication displayed by these fallen heroes. He emphasized that their legacies will never be forgotten and that their sacrifices continue to inspire the community.
The ceremony was emceed by Police Deputy Chief Megan Zabel and Deputy Chief Jason Hosea. Family members and loved ones of the fallen were invited to attend, along with other City leaders.

The event included traditional elements such as posting of colors, flag presentation, a 21-gun salute by the Long Beach City Honor Guards, and a "Last Alarm" tribute. The 21-gun salute is a long-standing tradition used by law enforcement to honor fallen officers. The ringing of bells also served as a moment of reflection for those who have given their lives in service.
Police Chief Wally Hebeish expressed his gratitude for the bravery and selflessness shown by these officers. He stood in solidarity with their families and friends in honoring their legacy.
Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan also spoke about the courage and sacrifice of these fallen heroes. He emphasized that their legacy lives on in the spirit of resilience that defines Long Beach.
