Long Beach’s Annual Ranchos Walk Returns Saturday, Sept. 26

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, the City of Long Beach will be hosting its Eighth Annual Ranchos Walk. This free event invites community members to join in a unique hiking experience that explores an urban trail connecting Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos. The 9.4-mile scenic route will take participants through the highest points of Long Beach and Signal Hill, including Longview Point at Willow Springs Park, Reservoir Hill, and Hilltop Park in Signal Hill.

Last year's Ranchos Walk saw over 500 participants and this year's event is expected to be even bigger. The walk will focus on the city's rich history and its transformation over time.

Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his excitement for the event, stating that it "spans across Long Beach neighborhoods, highlighting some of our most notable historical, cultural and natural features." He also encouraged residents to take advantage of this opportunity to explore their city in a safe and guided manner.

In addition to the full 9.4-mile hike, there will also be shorter route options of 3.5 miles and 6 miles. The walk will end at Rancho Los Alamitos where participants can enjoy music, games, and activities. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.

The Ranchos Walk is sponsored by the Port of Long Beach and supported by various city departments such as Health and Human Services and Public Works. It is organized by the City's Office of Climate Action and Sustainability with support from Walk Long Beach.

This year's theme for the walk is local history which aims to educate walkers about the people, places, and events that have shaped Long Beach into what it is today. Participants can access a free audio tour using the IZI travel app which is available for download on Apple and Android devices.

Registration for the event is free and more details can be found on lbcity.info/rw. The event will start at various locations throughout the city.

The goal of Ranchos Walk is to promote active, fun, and safe ways for people to explore their neighborhoods and discover historic landmarks and vista points. It also coincides with California Pedestrian Safety Month and supports the City's Safe Streets Action Plan by providing free education and resources to prevent pedestrian and bicycle-related injuries.

Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr expressed her excitement for the event, stating that "participants over the years have experienced how our city has grown and evolved." She also highlighted the City's commitment to safety, livability, and accessibility in its neighborhoods.

This event is part of the City's broader efforts to improve traffic safety. With support from California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP), and Port of Long Beach funds, the City has been able to expand its traffic safety education and outreach programs. These efforts have reached over 8,300 community members through school presentations, youth programs, community events, and safety demonstrations.

The Public Works Department's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program is currently addressing neighborhood traffic concerns through data-driven improvements. Additionally, their Speed Safety System will launch this fall to encourage safer driving and reduce speeding along some of the city's busiest corridors. The City also recently hosted its sixth annual Safe Streets Awareness Week which included a series of free community events promoting traffic safety, active transportation, and stronger neighborhood connections.
