City of Long Beach Opens Applications for Third Cohort of Long Beach Fire Corps Program

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is offering a unique opportunity for young people to gain hands-on work experience and professional training through its Long Beach Fire Corps Program. In partnership with the Long Beach Fire Department, the Department of Economic Development & Opportunity (EDO) is now accepting applications for the third cohort of the program.

The Long Beach Fire Corps Program is open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 and aims to provide them with valuable skills and experiences within the fire department. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply online by Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.

Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his support for the program, stating that it is a testament to the city's investment in its youth. "By opening the doors of the Long Beach Fire Department, we are giving youth an opportunity to see themselves in public service, gain firsthand experience, and build the skills and confidence they need to pursue their goals," said Mayor Richardson.

The program is led by EDO's Long Beach Workforce Innovation Network (LBWIN) Youth Career Services Center and offers a seven-month course consisting of paid work experience, monthly workshops, and professional trainings such as CPR certification and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. Participants will work within the Fire Prevention Bureau's Community Services Division to support communications-related activities and special events.

Participants will be compensated $22 per hour for a maximum of 450 hours. Priority will be given to Long Beach residents. Interested individuals can find more information about eligibility and requirements on the Program webpage.

To assist prospective applicants, EDO will be hosting a virtual information session on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026 from 10-10:30 a.m.

Long Beach Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan also expressed his support for the program, stating that it allows them to invest directly in the next generation of public servants. "Participants work alongside our team, contribute to meaningful community programs, and learn how many different people and professions are needed to support a strong and effective fire department," said Chief Buchanan.

The first two cohorts of the program had a combined total of 33 participants, with eight of them securing employment with the Fire Department upon successful completion of the internship.

EDO Director Bo Martinez also shared his pride in working alongside the Fire Department to offer young people a unique opportunity to serve their community. "Through this internship, participants will learn from those who serve on the front lines and gain experiences that will help inspire and prepare them for a future in public safety and service," said Director Martinez.
