~ California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Oct. 22 that he had granted 27 pardons and 30 commutations. The recipients were recommended by elected officials, correctional staff, including a former prison warden, medical professionals, teachers, and community and faith leaders, according to the governor's office.

The office said Newsom considers applicants' personal development since their offenses, public safety and the potential effects of clemency on communities, including crime victims and survivors.

A pardon recognizes rehabilitation after a conviction and successful reintegration into the community, the office said. It may also remove barriers to employment and public service and restore civic rights and responsibilities.

A commutation modifies a sentence, generally making an incarcerated person eligible to appear before the Board of Parole Hearings earlier. The board considers factors including input from victims and survivors and district attorneys when deciding whether a person can safely be released on parole, according to the announcement.

The governor's office said Newsom has granted 303 pardons, 199 commutations and 45 reprieves during his time in office.

The office encouraged victims, survivors and witnesses to register with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's Office of Victims and Survivors Rights and Services to receive information about an incarcerated person's status. The office can be reached at 1-877-256-6877.
