~ California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed October 2026 as Disability Employment Awareness Month, recognizing the contributions of residents with disabilities and highlighting the importance of access to employment.
The proclamation, issued Oct. 16 and announced Oct. 21, says California has 4.7 million residents living with disabilities. It describes them as entrepreneurs, educators, public servants, skilled workers and leaders whose work strengthens communities and the state's economy.
This year's theme is "Celebrating Value and Talent," according to the proclamation, which says employment opportunities should not be limited by disability.

Newsom's statement also raises concerns about federal actions that he said could threaten services supporting independent living and workforce participation. It says California is protecting services and investing in education, care and employment opportunities amid federal uncertainty.
The proclamation cites the administration's Master Plan for Career Education, which it says is intended to expand hands-on learning and access to job training for people of all backgrounds.
"Accessibility must become the default in the places we work, the technology we use, and the systems people depend on," the proclamation says. It adds that the state will continue to support access, inclusion and equal opportunity.
