SAN FRANCISCO - Californer -- DocJax, a document search engine that first went online in 2009, has relaunched at docjax.com as a free search engine for public domain government documents. The new version indexes records released by U.S. federal agencies, so every file it lists can be read and shared freely. It is built for researchers, students, journalists, history readers, and anyone trying to find an official document without knowing which agency site it is buried on.
The original DocJax ran as a general document search engine from about 2009 to 2011, then went dark. The domain changed hands, and the site was rebuilt from scratch this fall. The name and the idea are the same as before. The difference is the scope: the new DocJax only indexes documents that are in the public domain, and it adds them one official source at a time.
DocJax does not keep its own copies of files. Every download link points to the agency that published the document, so readers always get the original. The site is free to use and needs no account. DocJax is independent and is not affiliated with the IRS or any government agency.

"People still search for DocJax by name, years after it went offline, and they were landing on a site that had nothing to do with documents," said the DocJax team. "So we brought it back as what it used to be, a document search engine, but only for files anyone is free to use."
More collections from official U.S. government sources are planned. The search engine is at https://docjax.com.
