Server Memory Up 27 Percent Since March While DDR4 Falls 25 Percent: eRacks Publishes Its Tracking

CAMPBELL, Calif. - Californer -- eRacks Open Source Systems today published six months of memory street-price data from its own daily tracking, alongside a plain-language guide to where memory is going and what that means for anyone buying a server this year.

The company tracks the lowest street price per gigabyte for every major memory line every day because it quotes servers every day. From March to September 2026, taken as the median across lines in each class:

- DDR5 server memory (ECC RDIMM): $24.37 to $31.05 per GB, up 27 percent; the best available price rose 89 percent - DDR5 desktop memory: $12.19 to $14.58 per GB, up 20 percent - DDR4 server memory (ECC RDIMM): $7.44 to $5.56 per GB, down 25 percent - DDR4 desktop memory: $7.19 to $6.22 per GB, down 13 percent

The guide describes three directions for memory. Sealed high-bandwidth memory (HBM), stacked inside the processor package, gives AI accelerators their speed and cannot be upgraded. Flat CAMM2 modules, a JEDEC standard published in December 2023, are bringing replaceable memory back to thin laptops. And Compute Express Link (CXL) lets servers add memory in a PCIe slot, with later revisions of the standard pooling it across a rack.

"The market has moved a third against a buyer since March, and DDR4 is being liquidated at a seventh of the DDR5 price per gigabyte," said Joseph Wolff, founder and CTO of eRacks Systems. "With slots you can act on that. With sealed memory you cannot. Every quote we write shows the slot count next to what the order fills, so the upgrade path is visible before the purchase."

The company builds on AMD EPYC 9005 boards with 24 memory slots and up to 6TB, prices the memory line of every quote at that day's tracked street price, and expects to quote CXL memory expanders on EPYC 9005 and Xeon 6 platforms as they reach the channel.
