Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Airport's solar canopies have proven to be a successful investment one year after their installation. The large-scale solar installations, which were unveiled on Earth Day last year, have generated over 3 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating that it is a prime example of the airport's proactive approach towards reducing its carbon footprint while maintaining operational resilience. He also highlighted the significance of the energy savings achieved in just one year, marking a pivotal moment in LGB's journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
The solar canopies, located on top of Parking Structures A and B, have provided approximately 3.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy since their launch last spring. This is equivalent to offsetting carbon dioxide emissions from 291 homes' energy use in one year.
Councilwoman Megan Kerr from the Fifth District also commended the airport for its commitment to a cleaner and more resilient Long Beach. She noted that in just one year, substantial results have been achieved through the solar canopies, proving that clean energy is not just a distant goal but a reality happening now.

The energy savings from the solar canopies contribute to Long Beach's broader sustainability goals and align with the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. This program focuses on reducing per-passenger emissions and has already achieved a 38% reduction since 2016 with the long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
Airport Director Cynthia Guidry emphasized the positive impact of renewable energy at LGB during its first year of operation. Not only does it reduce the airport's environmental footprint, but it also provides shade for vehicles parked on top of the garages, creating a more comfortable experience for travelers. Guidry also highlighted how this project showcases LGB's dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.
The solar panels are part of the Citywide Solar Project led by Long Beach's Department of Public Works. This project has installed large solar projects at 11 different city facilities. Luminace, a Brookfield company, is the owner-operator of the solar installations, which cover nearly 133,000 square feet of rooftop space on LGB's two parking structures.
Long Beach Airport, officially trademarked as "America's Coolest Airport," offers a stress-free journey and first-class customer experience conveniently located between Los Angeles and Orange counties. With air carriers such as Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines offering service to 22 nonstop destinations and one-stop service to nearly 400 cities worldwide, LGB continues to provide a distinctively enjoyable travel experience.
