New & groundbreaking exhibition brings the heroines of 1821 into today's cultural conversation through bold imagery and modern storytelling
NEW YORK - Californer -- A groundbreaking new exhibition, '#WeAreGreekWarriors: From the Greek Revolution to Today: The Power of the Heroines of 1821 Lives in Every Woman,' will open this month at the Hellenic Museum of Michigan in Detroit. Presented in celebration of Women's History Month, the exhibit and its accompanying programming highlight the legacy of the heroines of the Greek War of Independence.
What began as a social media campaign in 2023 has evolved into a global movement. Created by One Bean Marketing founder Angie Xidias, the #WeAreGreekWarriors campaign celebrates the women of the Greek Revolution as leaders, visionaries, and architects of change.
"It started as a simple campaign to honor the women of the Greek Revolution whose names and stories are unknown or have been forgotten," said Xidias. "As a first-generation Greek American woman, I have always carried pride in our history, but I also felt a need to take a closer look, to ask where the women were in the stories we were taught."
She found stories of extraordinary heroines. Women who funded fleets, commanded ships, strategized battles, protected communities, preserved culture, and fueled the fight for freedom. To date, many of the women remain historically underrepresented or unknown.
The campaign garnered global attention, with coverage in Marie Claire (Greece), The National Herald (U.S.), and Neos Kosmos (Australia), leading to a museum exhibition at the Hellenic Museum of Michigan.

Presented in partnership with Hellenic Museum of Michigan, One Bean Marketing, Ramona Pintea, National Hellenic Society, and Detroit Cultural Center, this new exhibition is an evolution of Xidias' mission, which will allow the women to claim their rightful place in history and set the stage for the discovery and recognition of more of these heroines.
"Through the stories of these remarkable women depicted through art, literature, cinema, and dance, we hope to demonstrate once again how the arts continue to connect us across generations and communities," said Harry Gaggos, executive director of the Hellenic Museum of Michigan.
'#WeAreGreekWarriors: From the Greek Revolution to Today: The Power of the Heroines of 1821 Lives in Every Woman' brings the heroines of 1821 into today's cultural conversation through bold imagery and modern storytelling. Building on the momentum of OBM's social campaign, the exhibition features seven stunning original artworks by contemporary artist Ramona Pintea as well as interactive programming designed to educate and awaken the Greek Warrior spirit within us all.
"By reinterpreting these women through a contemporary visual lens we bring past and present into dialogue, positioning historical heroines alongside modern conceptions of female strength and sovereignty," said Pintea. "The individual portraits coexist with collective representations, emphasizing both personal action and communal resilience. Through this approach, we reframe history as a living continuum rather than a closed chapter."
Xidias invites women of all generations and backgrounds to see themselves reflected in the women of the Greek Revolution, whose stories are still relevant today.
