New book what doesn't kill you: one cop's perspective on homelesseness, mental illness, and addiction exposes the truth behind why the homeless crisis persists
SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, Calif. - Californer -- Eric Hofstein shares what he learned working on behalf of the homeless as a Bay Area Rapid Transit cop in San Francisco, California from 2016 to 2021.
Eric Hofstein is a retired Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Officer who began homeless outreach on his beat in the San Francisco, California stations in 2015. Having stumbled into the work, unable to turn a blind eye to those living on the floors of the underground BART stations, he learned how to effect real change one case at a time. Before he retired, he was touched by over 130 people who shared enough of their lives with him to allow him to glean practicable skills. He realized that these skills are transferable, and that his success was replicable. He is compelled to share what he learned so that others can build on it and apply it in their communities.

In this book Eric Hofstein shows the complexity of the issue and the pitfalls of previous and current efforts to end homelessness.
Eric demystifies the failure of efforts based on years of intensive studies that are, at best, several decades old and inappropriate for current societal problems. With this book, the reader is invited behind closed doors to see the dysfunction that is the wrench in the works of social services departments. Knowledge is power, and he gives the power back to the reader to make real policy changes that will make a difference in the lives of millions.
Eric Hofstein is expanding his work in the form of a nonprofit corporation in Northwest Georgia. He is open for interview requests and will consider speaking engagements for his partner and wife, Mary Beth Hofstein. He is also willing to work with Law Enforcement agencies interested in adapting his work to their departments.
What Doesn't Kill You: One Cop's Perspective on Homelessness, Mental Illness, and Addiction by Eric Hofstein is available on Amazon.com in paperback for $6.99 and as an eBook for $2.99.
