- On Friday, July 12th at 12:30 p.m. PST, BraveMaker Film Festival will host the premiere of Sweet Santa Barbara Brown at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in Redwood City, CA. The short film was written and produced by Solomon Hughes and directed by Eric Dyson.
- Solomon Hughes, a star on the HBO sports drama television series, "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty," played the role of the famous Los Angeles Lakers basketball player, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In this new film, Solomon provides a riveting performance as one of four teammates who confronts the violent consequences of being black in America. The film is inspired by actual and uniquely American events.
- Sweet Santa Barbara Brown is one of three short films that will screen at Friday Films, Lunch, and Conversations on Justice, where Solomon will be on the panel at BraveMaker Film Festival.
- Set against the backdrop of the Reagan era, under the Californian sunshine, Sweet Santa Barbara Brown is a compelling short film that skillfully weaves elements of celebrity, racial tension, and life-or-death decisions.
- Inspired by actual events, this narrative unfolds in the 80s when members of the Globetrotters are confronted with lethal force by members of the Santa Barbara Police Department. The players were wrongfully suspected of a jewelry store robbery earlier in the day, resulting in a harrowing standoff.
- Intriguing and thought-provoking, Sweet Santa Barbara Brown offers a fictionalized retelling of an all-too-familiar American narrative – one that delves into the repercussions of law enforcement mistakes that can have fatal consequences. This gripping short film explores the complexities of justice, prejudice, and the high-stakes decisions that define a critical moment in history.
- The BraveMaker Film Festival runs from July 11-14 in Redwood City, CA. Check out the festival schedule at https://bravemaker.com/film-fest/. Please contact press@bravemaker.com with any questions.
