BNC highlighted the 3x3 inch sodium iodide (NaI) detector option for its SAM 950 Ruggedized Radiation Isotope Identifier (RIID), built for fire, hazmat, law enforcement and emergency management teams.
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Californer -- Why detector volume matters in the field
A 3x3 inch NaI crystal holds roughly 347 cubic centimeters of scintillator, more than three times the volume of a 2x2 inch crystal. More crystal absorbs and counts more gamma rays. For responders, that means less dwell time beside an unknown package, a better chance of catching shielded or masked sources during secondary screening, and spectra with more counts to send to reachback experts.
Built for the way responders work
Designed to meet ANSI N42.34 requirements for handheld radionuclide identifiers, the SAM 950 also offers:
Configurations

The 3x3 inch configuration weighs 4.3 kg (9.5 lb), includes a tripod mount, and is available gamma-only (950-G-N30) or with neutron detection (950-GN-N30). Smaller NaI detectors and LaBr3 and CeBr3 high-resolution detectors are also available.

In service, the SAM 950 supports secondary screening, hazmat response, event management and port and border law enforcement. With a suspect package, an operator can set the SAM 950 down, step back and run the identification from a paired smartphone up to 30 ft away, or hand control to a reachback team.

- Identification of isotope, category and confidence level against ANSI, ANSI+ 2015, medical, industrial and user-defined libraries.
- Glove-operable keys, a 5 inch touchscreen and a finder mode for source hunting.
- A Geiger-Muller tube covering dose rates up to 10 R/hr when the NaI detector saturates.
- One-click reachback in ANSI N42.42-2012 or CSV format by email or Wi-Fi to RadResponder, with GPS location.
- An IP65 rated, sprayable housing, more than 8 hours of battery life and an optional neutron detector.
