Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Airport has replaced six fossil-fueled vehicles with all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup trucks and installed movable solar charging units to support their use, the airport said.
The trucks will be used for airfield and other airport operations. The freestanding solar units are designed to generate electricity without relying on the traditional power grid, according to the airport.
The project was supported by a $680,851 Federal Aviation Administration grant awarded in September 2024 through the agency's Airport Zero Emissions Vehicle and Infrastructure Pilot Program. The airport said it covered the remaining $72,803 in costs with its own revenue.
"By integrating zero-emission vehicles with innovative solar charging solutions, Long Beach Airport is demonstrating how sustainability and operational excellence can go hand in hand," Airport Director Cynthia Guidry said.

Mayor Rex Richardson said the investments are part of the city's efforts to reduce environmental impacts and support a more sustainable future.
The airport has set a goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2045. It reported reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 56% between 2016 and 2024, exceeding its earlier targets of a 20% reduction by 2025 and 40% by 2030.
Long Beach Airport also said it recently renewed its Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International for the sixth consecutive year. The airport said it is among 75 U.S. airports to receive an accreditation.
Other sustainability measures cited by the airport include electrifying ground-service equipment at all 11 commercial gates, supporting the use of lower-emission aviation fuels and installing solar canopies over parking structures in 2024. The canopies cover nearly 133,000 square feet; the airport said they helped reduce its controlled and purchased electricity use by 10% compared with the previous year.
