~ In a tragic event, eight personnel from a California-based active-duty squadron at Edwards Air Force Base lost their lives in a crash. Governor Gavin Newsom and Acting Governor Monique Limón expressed their condolences and honored the fallen personnel in a statement released today.
The statement acknowledged the bravery, service, dedication, and commitment of the eight individuals to the nation's defense. It also recognized their contributions to the country and extended support to their families, friends, colleagues, and communities who are grieving this loss. The state of California stands with Edwards Air Force Base, the United States Air Force, and all those affected by this devastating accident.
The individuals who lost their lives in the crash were identified as Col. Gregory Watson, Lt. Col. Gabriel Estrella, retired Lt. Col. Miles Middleton, Maj. Alexander Davis, Maj. Robert Dee, Maj. Brad Hovey, Jeromy Smith, and Christopher Rischar.

According to military officials, the B-52 Stratosphere aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff while conducting a test flight for a radar modernization program at Edwards Air Force Base. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by federal authorities.
In honor of these personnel, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
In other news from Sacramento today, Acting Governor Monique Limón made history by becoming the first Latina Senate President pro Tempore in California to sign legislation into law as Acting Governor. These bills aim to modernize local government operations and reduce administrative burdens.
Additionally, California launched its Career Passport program on June 17th which aims to connect qualified workers to employment opportunities regardless of whether they have a four-year degree or not. This program recognizes real-world skills and experience to boost job opportunities for capable workers.
In light of Juneteenth and America's 250th anniversary approaching soon, Governor Newsom announced a special free pass to California's state historic parks. This special edition California State Parks Historian Passport will be available for download until the Fourth of July weekend, in contrast to the Trump administration's attempts to whitewash American history.
