~ Sacramento, CA - On March 4, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom and Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis released a statement honoring the life and service of U.S. Army Reserve Chief Warrant Officer Three Robert M. Marzan. The 54-year-old Sacramento native was one of six U.S. service members killed in the ongoing conflict in Iran.
In their statement, the governors expressed their condolences to Marzan's wife and family, acknowledging his bravery and dedication to serving his country. They also recognized the sacrifices made by military families and stood in solidarity with them during this difficult time.
According to the U.S. Army, Marzan is believed to have passed away on March 1, 2026 in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), United States Army Reserve in Des Moines.

To honor Marzan's memory, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will continue to be flown at half-staff.
In other news, Governor Newsom has ordered flags at all state buildings to be flown at half-staff as civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson is laid to rest. Public memorial services for Reverend Jackson will take place as the nation mourns his passing.
Governor Newsom also announced appointments on March 3, 2026 including Caroline Thomas Jacobs as Director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. Jacobs brings a wealth of experience from her previous role as Director of California's Office of Energy.
Lastly, Governor Newsom proclaimed March 1 through March 7, 2026 as "Peace Corps Week" in honor of the organization's founding in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. The Peace Corps has been instrumental in promoting peace and understanding around the world through volunteer service.
