~ SACRAMENTO - In a recent announcement, Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that he has granted 16 pardons as part of multiple clemency actions. These individuals were recommended for clemency by various members of the community, including law enforcement officers, teachers, and elected officials.
According to the Governor's office, a clemency grant is given to recognize an individual's self-development and accountability after a conviction. The Governor takes into consideration several factors when reviewing clemency applications, such as the applicant's conduct since the offense, the impact on public safety, and the effect on the community and crime victims.
Since taking office, Governor Newsom has granted a total of 263 pardons, 160 commutations, and 42 reprieves. A pardon acknowledges an individual's rehabilitation after a conviction and can remove barriers to employment and public service while restoring civic rights and responsibilities.
The Governor's Office also encourages victims, survivors, and witnesses to register with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to receive information about an incarcerated person's status.
