~ Sacramento - Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that the Delta Conveyance Project has reached a new milestone in its efforts to modernize California's water infrastructure. The project has received a required Incidental Take Permit, which includes measures to minimize, avoid, and fully mitigate impacts on threatened or endangered species.

The Delta Conveyance Project aims to upgrade the State Water Project, allowing for more efficient capture and movement of water during high-flow atmospheric rivers. This will help the state better endure dry seasons and improve its ability to take advantage of intense periods of rain and excess flows in the Sacramento River.

"California doesn't have to choose between safeguarding endangered species and protecting our water supply - this permit demonstrates we can do both," said Governor Newsom.

The project is crucial in light of California's expected loss of 10% of its water supply due to hotter and drier conditions. The state's 60-year-old water infrastructure is not equipped to handle these climate impacts, which are resulting in more intense swings between droughts and floods.

"We are proceeding with confidence towards implementing this critical project to protect our state's primary supply of clean, affordable water," said Karla Nemeth, Director of California's Department of Water Resources.

The Incidental Take Permit was issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and is commonly issued for construction, utility, transportation, and other infrastructure-related projects. To mitigate the impacts on protected species, measures such as erecting protective fencing around sensitive habitats within construction sites and limiting operating periods will be implemented.

The Delta Conveyance Project is a key component of Governor Newsom's "build more, faster" agenda to modernize California's water infrastructure and increase resilience against extreme droughts and floods. More information about this project can be found at build.ca.gov.

In other news, Governor Newsom recently announced appointments on February 12th and 11th. Kate Hoit has been appointed Deputy Secretary of Communications at the California Department of Veterans Affairs, and Karen Morrison has been appointed Director at the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

As California prepares for the biggest winter storm of the season, proactive steps are being taken to protect communities and harden burn scar areas. Highly-specialized personnel and response equipment are on the ground across the state to mitigate potential impacts from this storm system.
