~ SACRAMENTO - In a proclamation issued today, Governor Gavin Newsom declared January 15, 2026 as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the State of California. The proclamation was made in honor of Dr. King's legacy and his powerful example of standing up against injustice and uniting people across differences.
Dr. King's call to protect democracy and fight against injustice still resonates today, more than 50 years after his passing. His moral leadership and impact on the civil rights movement continue to inspire generations to come.
Governor Newsom acknowledged that while we have not fully realized Dr. King's vision, California is making progress towards addressing long-standing challenges and barriers faced by African Americans. The state is committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to pursue the California Dream.
The proclamation also highlighted Dr. King's reminder that moral leadership does not require a position of power, but rather the will to do what is right. He stood on the shoulders of civil rights leaders before him and worked alongside activists to transform how our country saw itself and its future.
