~ Sacramento - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared April 26 to May 2, 2026 as "National Apprenticeship Week" in California. This proclamation highlights the state's commitment to apprenticeships as a vital career pathway for its citizens and a key contributor to the state's prosperity and economic growth.
The "earn and learn" workforce development model of apprenticeships has proven to be an effective alternative to traditional education paths, benefiting both employers and workers by filling skill gaps in critical areas and promoting business growth. In 2025, California allocated over $240 million towards high-quality apprenticeships and continues to invest $30 million annually into the California Apprenticeship Initiative Grants, which aim to develop and expand new and innovative apprenticeship programs.
California boasts the largest apprenticeship system in the nation, with over 245,000 individuals completing registered apprenticeships since 2019. Additionally, 1 in every 30 workers in California has completed an earn-and-learn apprenticeship. The state has also pioneered the Apprenticeship Innovation Fund (AIF), which has achieved significant growth in non-traditional apprenticeships since its inception in 2021. In 2025 alone, AIF funded 70 apprenticeship programs and over 11,000 apprentices who earned an average of $50.29 per hour.

Governor Newsom's administration is committed to providing opportunities for all Californians through various initiatives such as the California Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship grant, which supports young people facing barriers to employment and education by providing opportunities in high-demand career pathways through registered pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs. The Equal Representation in Construction Apprenticeships grant program also aims to break down barriers for women pursuing work in the building trades by funding partners that provide direct stipends for childcare, support recruitment and outreach efforts, and improve worksite culture through training.
National Apprenticeship Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of apprentices, employers, training providers, educators, labor unions, and workforce development partners who collaborate to make California's apprenticeship system prosperous and full of opportunities for all. Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the state's commitment to promoting apprenticeships as a valuable career pathway.
