~ In response to the Trump administration's decision to terminate federal grant agreements funding California's high-speed rail, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state is considering all options to fight this action.
The project, which is currently in the track laying phase and has already completed over 60 miles of guideway, has been actively building across 171 miles and has constructed more than 50 major railway structures. This progress puts California ahead of other states, such as Texas, where a similar high-speed rail project has failed to take off.
Governor Newsom stated that Trump's actions are an attempt to "hand China the future" and abandon the Central Valley. He emphasized that California will not let this happen and will fight against this illegal action.
Back in January, Governor Newsom joined California High Speed Rail Authority CEO Ian Choudri, local leaders, and workers near Bakersfield to break ground on the railhead. This milestone allowed for the beginning of track laying, which is one of the final steps in construction after land acquisition, environmental clearances, and completion of supporting structures.

CEO Choudri also spoke out against Trump's decision, stating that canceling these grants without cause is not only wrong but also illegal. He pointed out that the Authority has met all its obligations as confirmed by multiple federal reviews as recently as February 2025. With over 15,500 jobs created and passenger service expected between 2030 and 2033, Choudri stressed that now is not the time for Washington to walk away from America's transportation future.
In addition to progress on construction and job creation, high-speed rail has also made significant strides in other areas. All environmental reviews spanning 463 miles from Los Angeles to the Bay Area have been completed, Caltrain electrification is finished, trainset selection is underway, and station and track construction are on deck. The project also aims to create a southwest regional high-speed rail network by working with partner rail systems.

Governor Newsom has made high-speed rail a key part of his "build more, faster" agenda, which aims to deliver infrastructure upgrades and create jobs throughout the state. He has also recently announced appointments and visited local businesses in the Los Angeles area impacted by federal immigration raids, calling on Trump to end the deployment of soldiers and sharing resources for community members.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom has invited residents affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires to participate in shaping the rebuilding efforts through Engaged California. The first phase of engagement with fire survivors has already led to early actions guided by their input.
As California continues to make progress on its high-speed rail project, Governor Newsom remains committed to fighting against any attempts to hinder its success. With the project expected to bring numerous benefits, including job creation and improved transportation options, it is clear that California will not back down in the face of adversity.
