~ In response to President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the United Nations climate framework, Governor Gavin Newsom of California has issued a scathing statement, slamming the president as "brainless" and accusing him of surrendering America's global leadership and ceding economic ground to China.
Governor Newsom, who has been a vocal advocate for climate action, expressed his disappointment in Trump's decision, stating that it weakens America's ability to compete in the economy of the future and creates a leadership vacuum that China is already exploiting. He also emphasized that California will not back down in its own leadership on this issue.
As the world's fourth-largest economy, California has been at the forefront of efforts to combat climate change. Last year, Governor Newsom led a delegation to Brazil for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), where they forged strategic partnerships and announced breakthrough clean energy achievements. The governor also highlighted how states and regions are driving progress on climate action where national governments have fallen short.

California's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously growing its economy is evident. Since 2000, emissions have decreased by 21%, while the state's GDP has increased by 81%. This makes California the world's fourth-largest economy with one of the lowest emission levels per capita.
The state has also made significant strides in clean energy production. In 2023, two-thirds of California's energy came from renewable sources, making it the largest economy in the world to achieve this level. Additionally, almost every day last year, California ran on 100% clean electricity for part of the day.
Under Governor Newsom's administration, battery storage capacity has increased by over 2,100%, with nearly 17,000 megawatts now available. The state has also added over 30,000 megawatts of new resources to its electric grid. These efforts put California on track to reach its goal of 100% clean electricity by 2045.

The governor also addressed Valero's decision to idle its Benicia refinery and continue supplying California's market through other means. He praised the state's close coordination in maintaining a stable supply of fuel and protecting consumers at the pump.
Finally, Governor Newsom announced several appointments, including Martha Sanchez Cannady to the 32nd District Agricultural Association, Orange County Fair Board. Sanchez Cannady brings a wealth of experience as a First Vice President of Wealth Management at a major financial institution.
Governor Newsom remains committed to California's leadership on climate action and will continue working with states, cities, and international allies to create a cleaner, healthier future for all Americans.
