~ Sacramento, California - On May 26, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation declaring the day as "Memorial Day" in honor of those who have lost their lives while serving in the military. The proclamation was made to remember and honor the brave individuals who chose to serve something greater than themselves.

The tradition of Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War. Major General John A. Logan formalized the date in a "Memorial Day Order" to ensure that future generations would not forget the cost of a free and undivided republic. Since then, Memorial Day has expanded to honor all those who have lost their lives in service to our nation.

On this day of reflection, many Californians will participate in ceremonies at various cemeteries throughout the state, including three veterans' cemeteries and nine national veterans' cemeteries. The names of these fallen heroes can also be found on memorials across the country, from Washington D.C.'s Capitol Mall to Sacramento's own Capitol Park.

Governor Newsom paid tribute to these brave individuals by ordering flags to be flown at half-staff on all state buildings and grounds throughout California. He also invited all Californians to participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m., a shared moment of silence to recognize those who put their country before all else.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of honoring and caring for our veterans who are still with us. He stated that we must never forget the sacrifices they made to protect our rights and freedoms.

To witness this proclamation, Governor Newsom signed it on May 15th and caused the Great Seal of California to be affixed. The Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber also attested it.

In other news, Governor Newsom announced several appointments on May 23rd, including Andrew "Tristan" Peery as the Senior Product Manager at the Office of Data and Innovation. Peery previously served as the Director of Web and Interactive Communications in Sacramento.

Additionally, the City of Tustin received a new water treatment system to eliminate PFAS, or "forever chemicals," from their drinking water. This state-funded system will help ensure clean and safe drinking water for the community.

Governor Newsom also allocated an additional $56 million in grants to help counties provide services for young adults at risk of homelessness. This funding is part of California's ongoing efforts to reduce homelessness among youth.

As Governor Newsom continues to make important appointments and allocate funds for various initiatives, Californians can look forward to a brighter future under his leadership.
