City of Long Beach to Hold Moment of Silence in Remembrance of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As the 24th anniversary of the tragic events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks approaches, the City of Long Beach has announced plans to observe a citywide moment of silence on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025. The memorial ceremony, hosted by Mayor Rex Richardson and the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments, will serve as a citywide opportunity to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that fateful day.

According to Mayor Richardson, "September 11, 2001 forever changed our nation, and each year we gather to ensure we never forget that fateful day. By standing together, we embody the same perseverance and hope that carried us through it." He added, "Today we honor the thousands of innocent lives taken too soon, the brave first responders who gave everything to save others and the families who continue to carry on their legacies."

The ceremony will begin at approximately 9:05 a.m. with a Last Alarm tribute followed by a ceremonial wreath placement. Mayor Richardson will then share words of reflection before a moment of silence is observed. A bagpiper will perform "Amazing Grace" as a final tribute.

Chief of Police Wally Hebeish emphasized the importance of taking a moment to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11. "We will never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others on 9/11," he said.

Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan also expressed his sentiments about honoring those who lost their lives on September 11th. "Today we stand in solemn remembrance of the lives lost on September 11th and the extraordinary courage of the first responders who served our nation on that day," he said. "The Long Beach Fire Department is honored to join our community in paying tribute to their sacrifice and reaffirming our commitment to protect and serve with the same spirit of duty."

The City is inviting members of the community to take a moment for a quiet, personal reflection during this time to honor the memory of those who were killed and the bravery of the first responders in New York, Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia on Sept. 11, 2001.

Residents who are unable to attend the ceremony in person can watch it via livestream on various City pages including Facebook, YouTube, and Long Beach Television. Additionally, all City facilities will fly the American flag at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, Sept. 11 as a mark of respect for the first responders and civilians who died during the terrorist attack.

As Long Beach prepares to observe this solemn day of remembrance, Mayor Richardson reminds us that "by standing together and honoring those we lost on 9/11, we reaffirm our commitment to never forget and continue to move forward with strength and resilience."
