Long Beach Health Department to Host Back-to-School Vaccination and Resource Fair

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services is gearing up to host their annual "Superheroes Shield Up for School" event. This back-to-school vaccination and resource fair will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Main Health Facility located at 2525 Grand Ave.

The free event, which has a superhero theme, aims to help families prepare for the upcoming school year by providing school-required vaccinations, connections to community resources, and family-friendly activities.

Mayor Rex Richardson expressed the importance of childhood vaccinations in keeping the community healthy. He stated, "This free event helps students prepare for a return to school while providing families with valuable health resources."

Children and teens ages 18 and younger who are uninsured, enrolled in Medi-Cal, or identify as American Indian or Alaska Native are eligible to receive school-required vaccinations at this event. All vaccines required for school entry will be offered for free, including Tdap boosters for seventh-grade students. It is important to note that California law requires students entering transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and seventh grade to meet specific immunization requirements before attending school.

While vaccine appointments are recommended and can be scheduled through MyTurn in English and Spanish, walk-ins will also be accommodated. Families are encouraged to bring their child's immunization record. For those who may not have a physical copy of their records on hand, the California Digital Vaccine Record (DVR) provides secure access to official immunization records that can be accessed online or printed as proof of vaccination for various needs such as school attendance or work requirements.

Acting Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada emphasized the importance of vaccinations in protecting children from serious diseases. He stated, "Just as superheroes help keep their communities safe, vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect children from serious diseases." Dr. Okada also highlighted the benefits of vaccinations in keeping students healthy, reducing missed school days, and safeguarding those who cannot be vaccinated. He encouraged families to see each vaccine as a small act of heroism that contributes to building a healthier and stronger Long Beach.

In addition to providing vaccinations, the event will also feature free food, back-to-school giveaways, games, superhero-themed activities, and opportunity prize drawings for children who receive a vaccine. Families are encouraged to attend dressed as their favorite superheroes.

The event will also have informational booths hosted by community organizations and service providers offering resources and support for families. The Health Department's Sensory Area For Everyone (S.A.F.E.) vehicle will also be available on-site, providing a quiet and inclusive vaccination space for individuals with sensory needs.

Last year, the Health Department administered nearly 200 doses of required vaccines at their Back-to-School Clinics. This helped families meet California's immunization requirements before the start of the school year.
