Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Public Works, in collaboration with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, is set to host two community workshops to gather feedback and share information on the design and planning of two major projects that will transform Drake and Cesar E. Chavez Parks and the surrounding area. These workshops will take place on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center (401 Golden Ave.) and virtually on Monday, Oct. 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The primary focus of these workshops will be to provide an update on the efforts to connect Drake and Cesar E. Chavez Parks by developing 4.5 acres of new parkland. This project aims to transform a former industrial parcel into an open space and recreational amenity for the community. The Public Works project team will also confirm community input gathered during a survey in 2021 and earlier outreach efforts that informed the Vision Plan adopted by the Long Beach City Council in 2019. They will also outline next steps for finalizing the design and securing additional funding for construction.

In addition to this project, the City will introduce new planning efforts for further revitalization in the area under the Drake-Chavez Master Planning Project. The community's input is crucial in shaping priorities for this once-in-a-generation effort that has the potential to bring even more green space and recreational access to the area. By connecting existing parcels, this initiative aims to deliver lasting environmental and social benefits for neighborhoods in the surrounding areas.

While these projects are independent from one another and therefore on separate phases of planning and development, they will work cohesively to transform the surrounding areas.

The workshops offer participants an opportunity to learn about both projects and provide feedback that will help shape their designs and vision. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. Interpretation services in Spanish, Khmer, and Tagalog will be provided. To ensure accommodation for any other needs, participants are requested to make a request in advance by Monday, Oct. 13 when registering for either of the workshops.

The virtual community meeting will take place on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, from noon to 1:30 pm via Zoom at bit.ly/LBDrakeChavezMeeting.

These projects reflect the City's commitment to creating more accessible, connected, and equitable spaces throughout Long Beach communities. More information about these projects is available at lbcity.info/drakechavezconnection and lbcity.info/drakechavezmasterplanning.
