Global study calls for institutional leadership and ethical accountability in an AI-driven future

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Californer -- Dr. Angela Butts Chester has been named an expert contributor to Building a Human Resilience Infrastructure for the Age of AI, a 2026 report published by Elon University's Imagining the Digital Future Center.

The report features insights from 386 global experts examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping societal systems, governance, and human experience. A majority of respondents, 82%, expect AI to play a significantly larger role in daily life and institutional structures within the next decade.

Dr. Chester is among more than 160 contributors who provided extended analysis on the societal implications of AI adoption. Her work introduces the concept of "agency-based resilience," emphasizing the need for individuals and institutions to move beyond adaptation and actively shape the systems influencing human life.

"Resilience will not come from resisting change, but from anchoring change in values that honor human dignity, rational intelligence, and moral responsibility," she writes.

The report outlines an "institutions-first" approach to resilience, arguing that long-term societal stability will depend on coordinated efforts across governance, civic systems, and ethical frameworks. Contributors warn that reliance on automated decision-making without human oversight risks diffusing accountability.

Dr. Chester's contribution underscores the importance of maintaining ethical clarity in increasingly automated environments. "When humans defer moral decisions to systems optimized for efficiency, profit, or prediction, ethical responsibility becomes diffused," she notes.

Her perspective situates artificial intelligence within a broader human context, calling for intentional development alongside technological advancement. "The future of AI is inseparable from the future of humanity," she writes, adding that the central challenge is whether human beings will evolve "in depth, integrity, and wisdom" as rapidly as the technologies they create.

Her closing assertion frames the report's central tension: "The task before us is not to become more like machines, but to become more fully human in their presence."
